Background on the International Refugee Organization (IRO)
The IRO was established in 1946 as a temporary specialized agency of the United Nations. Its mandate was to assist with the care, repatriation, and resettlement of people displaced in Europe following the Second World War, thereby concluding part of the work previously undertaken by the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA).
The IRO was formally dissolved by Resolution No. 108, adopted by its General Council at the 101st meeting on 15 February 1952. By the end of its operations in 1952, the organization had assisted in the resettlement of approximately one million displaced persons. Its functions were subsequently taken over by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
